"Message to Superintendant " - Ret. Lt. Col. Stewart Russell
N.O.R.S.T. members consist of many visionary First Generation Trailblazing State Trooper Retirees who have agreed to share their invaluable individual experiential descriptions of the qualities of excellence that continuously connected them to the communities they served for more than 35 years.
This extraordinary source of vital experiential in-service information, not found in books, nor taught in schools or academies, will prove to be invaluable to many leaders in the 21st century, since few traditional published law enforcement reference sources have had access to real-life State Trooper retirees "day to day experiences with the people", particularly African American Trooper Trailblazers who have been at the forefront of public safety community service, effective community engagement practices, setting early examples of pride in their communities, and contributing to training strategies and leadership excellence cultures in State Police and Highway Patrol Officer spaces nationwide.
The N.O.R.S.T. sponsored ethnographic experiential research characteristics of excellence (N.O.R.S.T. " Excellence Standards ") we are sharing with you in our online content are uniquely designed to 'stimulate reflective thought', generate idea exchanges and aid modern law enforcement agencies, community members and public officials in developing new ways of seeing the individual Trooper experience, evaluating public safety as a 'practice of people' and to engage the community for increased support of the public safety mission.
Simply put, our continuously evolving experiential resources and rich member experiences help promote individual self-enrichment for anyone who cares enough to go beyond traditional law enforcement trade craft to develop greater culture awareness strategies for improving police -community engagement relationships using NORST universal practices of proven excellence today.
Our resources and the groundbreaking work of our experiential researchers, experienced research project managers and collaborative partners is organically authentic, reliable and based solely upon more than 65 years of practical lived-experiences of a diverse cross section of the nation's retired state troopers (first generation, second and third generation pioneers) and individuals supportive of our cultural awareness, educational and training mission.
The reliability and wisdoms of our N.O.R.S.T. "Excellence Standards" is based upon evaluating individual aggregate time collectively totaling more than 467 years of hands-on law enforcement service by sworn officers during the past 65 years, involving members who have actually performed the hard work of public safety service in the field, during the most challenging, personally and mentally debilitating, and socially chaotic conditions of our nation's history.
In our view, acknowledging and publicly recognizing our Trailblazing and Crusading Troopers ("Trooper Leaders") is the most compelling contribution we can make today to say "Thank You" to the courageous men and women whose lives were unduly subjected to an unimaginably painful law enforcement journey of institutional disrespect, frequent indignities, unfairness, isolation, purposeful discriminatory practices, unwarranted internal affairs investigations, arbitrary trial board hearings and obstructed career advancement. Yet, despite daily uncertainties, Trooper Leaders persevered through to became stronger and more determined to create paths of greater career opportunities that men and women enjoy in law enforcement today.
Consequently, we are delighted to share Trooper Leaders' insightful, motivating messages of hands-on experiences with you. We take great confidence in knowing that Trooper Leader voices are uniquely informed and have been painstakingly developed over time by 'observing, interacting with and learning the statewide value of their valuable service in diverse local communities in every state.
Thus, N.O.R.S.T. 'Excellence Standards', as presented through the art of our content, is a refreshingly new and imminently powerful tool for motivating positive change today. Our content strength originates from the sacrifices and embedded service wisdoms of pioneering State Troopers and Highway Patrol Officers that is being collectively accessed for first time ever, and presented in a relaxed, artistic, visually attractive way, so you can look at touching wisdoms that resonate with your spirit, without allegiance to how things have been done in the past by any organization.
"What you perceive is what exists in the history of our
N.O.R.S.T. Trooper experiences, and the deeper you look,
the greater our works will speak to your sincere life purposes ..."
In these spaces, we are organically sharing important, well-researched sociological stories of Trooper experiences and resources to let you know that we care. Our hope is that you find some part of yourself here or see parts of someone else that resonate with the life you create for yourself.
Socially, our wisdoms will help to promote greater understandings of the many challenges faced by each N.O.R.S.T. Member while creating new opportunities for personal reflection, growth, imagination, cultural awareness and practical transitions that improve community services for the benefit of others - the NORST way.
